Welcome to Politics 231, Media, opinion & propaganda

The key question for this course is: who really controls government, the media, the public, or political parties? We will discuss the principles of the political system: how the media, public and parties are supposed to interact within a democratic system, then explore how it works in practice. We will analyse how each player in the game can have influence and power and the consequences for democracy. The topics we will cover include:

This course will facilitate students to think critically about all material presented to them, and challenge their own pre-conceptions. It will raise their level of analytical skills, facilitating discussion and debate on the range of different theories and arguments without presenting an answer.
