Second half of semester

Five workshops are held during the second half of the semester:

  • The first workshop is a practical computing class. There are multiple identical one-hour sessions held each semester on using SPSS to do hypothesis tests for Assignment 3.
  • The other four workshops are designed to be exam prep by Lecture Workbook chapter/s. Each workshop is three hours long and there is plenty of time to do practical examples to check you understand the material.
  • No registration required - just turn up!

Please make sure you bring your calculator with you to these workshops!

Please note that workshops in italics have already been held this semester.

Drop-in sessions are being held this semester as follows:

  • Assignment 3 drop-in session – Saturday 17 October, 9.30am-4pm, LibB10
  • Exam prep drop-in session – Saturday 24 October, 9.30am-12.30pm, LibB15
  • Exam prep drop-in session – Monday 26 October, 9.30am-4pm, LibB10 (note that this is Labour Day so there will be free parking available on Princes St if you arrive early enough! Public transport will be on the Sunday timetable…)
  • Exam prep drop-in session – Saturday 31 October, 1-4pm, LibB10

Come along in-person or online and ask Leila questions about anything Stats-related!

What's this workshop all about?

This three-hour workshop looks at the Chi-square test for independence (two categorical variables). It is excellent exam preparation for Chapter 9.

Please bring your calculator!

Topics covered include:

  • Chi-square test assumptions
  • stating hypotheses
  • doing the test by hand including calculating expected counts, the Chi-square test statistic and degrees of freedom
  • interpreting computer (SPSS) output

Regression and Correlation

In Semester Two, 2020, this workshop was held as follows: Saturday 31 October, 9.30am-12.30pm, LibB10 (Basement of the General Library)

What's this workshop all about?

This three-hour workshop looks at simple linear regression - fitting straight lines to data - and correlation (two numeric variables). It is excellent exam preparation for Chapter 10.

Please bring your calculator!

Topics covered include:

  • interpreting computer (SPSS) output including scatter plots
  • simple linear regression including the least squares regression line, its hypothesis tests/assumptions and residuals
  • making predictions (confidence/prediction intervals)
  • correlation

Hypothesis Tests: Proportions

Includes for a single proportion and difference between two proportions.

In Semester Two, 2020, this workshop was held as follows: Tuesday 3 November, 9.30am-12.30pm, LibB10 (Basement of the General Library)

What's this workshop all about?

This three-hour workshop covers appropriate statistical analyses for exploring single proportions and differences between two proportions (i.e. one and two categorical variables). It is excellent exam preparation for Chapters 6 and 7 (proportions).

Please bring your calculator!

Topics covered include calculating and interpreting t-tests and confidence intervals for:

  • a single proportion and
  • differences between two proportions

Hypothesis Tests: Means

Includes for a single mean, paired data and differences between two or more means.

In Semester Two, 2020, this workshop was held as follows: Tuesday 3 November, 1-4pm, LibB10 (Basement of the General Library)

What are these workshops all about?

These two three-hour workshops cover appropriate statistical analyses for exploring differences between means (averages). They are excellent exam preparation for Chapters 6, 7 and 8 (means).

Please bring your calculator!

Topics covered include:

  • initial data display and interpreting plots
  • hypothesis tests (t-tests and the F-test for 1-way ANOVA) including setting up hypotheses and interpreting P-values and confidence intervals.

Hypothesis Tests in SPSS

In Semester Two 2020, six identical sessions of this workshop were held as follows:

  • Session 1: Friday 16 October, 3-4pm
  • Session 2: Monday 19 October, 10-11am
  • Session 3: Monday 19 October, 2-3pm
  • Session 4: Tuesday 20 October, 4-5pm
  • Session 5: Wednesday 21 October, 11am-midday
  • Session 6: Wednesday 21 October, 3-4pm

All sessions were held in Lab 302-160 which is on the first floor of Building 302 (Science Centre), next to the Stats Assistance Room - you can access Building 302 from Symonds St or via the Science Student Centre (Building 301) or via the walkway by the Science Student Resource Centre (Building 303/303S).

No booking required – just turn up to the session that suits your timetable!

What's this workshop all about?

This one-hour practical workshop covers using SPSS to carry out hypothesis tests for numeric data where differences in means are explored. This workshop is suitable for students with little/no experience using SPSS. Stats 101/101G/108 students will find it very useful preparation for the SPSS work they will need to do in Assignment 3.

Topics covered include:

  • stating hypotheses
  • creating plots
  • carrying out hypothesis tests including t-tests and the F-test for 1-way ANOVA
