Case 2

A young man with non-specific abdominal pain

You have seen a 25 year old male with 2 weeks of intermittent abdominal pain. His examination is normal, all his investigations are normal, and despite your best efforts you cannot find a diagnosis for his pain. He is currently comfortable.

Q1. Can he be discharged without a diagnosis for his pain being made?

Q2. What criteria need to be fulfilled for you to safely discharge him?

Q3. What advice do you give him on discharge?

How would your disposition change if the patient was a 70-year-old man with no cause found for his abdominal pain?
