Welcome to the ELE Phonology Module

This module's first aim is to help you improve your pronunciation, but it will do more than just that. It will have positive effects on your oral comprehension and writing skills because it reveals how spelling and pronunciation are often related in logical and systematic ways.

The module has been designed to meet the needs of students. Some of you have difficulties with individual sounds or words while others have trouble with making a sentence "flow", so this module covers phonological issues ranging from isolated sounds to words and whole sentences.

As you can see from the left-hand side menu, the module has two main pages: the "Phonology" page and the "Sounds of English" page.

 Phonology

The "Phonology" section is designed to help you improve your pronunciation skills in particular and your understanding of the English language in general. It is divided into 3 sub-pages: "Letters & Words", "Word Stress" and "Rhythm and Flow" whose contents are explained in an introductory note.

 Sounds of English

The "Sounds of English" section provides tables that classify the sounds of the English language into categories. Click on each sound and example word to hear it pronounced. You can practise repeating them if you like. Consider this section as an appendix page you might want to come back to from time to time as you work through the units.
