While an approach to reading such as SQ4R is very useful, exploring underlying issues to do with how meaning is constructed in academic writing is also beneficial. In general, academic writers follow certain conventions of academic style.
We will look at the following:
- Understanding text structure (the principles of paragraph construction and cohesion or linking)
- Understanding text types (writing that defines, compares and contrasts, explains or argues)
- Using context cues (such as using context cues or aids in the writing to understand unfamiliar words).
