Other strategies

While an approach to reading like SQ4R is very useful, exploring underlying issues to do with how meaning is constructed in academic English writing is also beneficial. In general, academic writers follow certain conventions of academic style.

We will look at the following:

• text structure (the principles of paragraph construction and cohesion or linking)

• text types (writing that defines, compares and contrasts, explains, or argues)

• use of context (such as using context 'cues' or 'aids' in the writing to understand unfamiliar words).
