Do I have to attend lectures?
Research done on a previous year’s cohort of Medsci 205 students have shown that students who attend lectures are more likely to pass Medsci 205 than those who don’t.
Do I have to attend all the laboratories?
Yes. But in case of Medical illness, bereavement and other unexpected circumstances you can be excused from that particular laboratory session. We do have labs every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, so you will have opportunities to make up for the missed lab.
What is the prescribed Text book for Medsci 206 and do I have to buy it?
The prescribed text book for Medsci 206 is Purves et al 4th edition. It can be purchased from University Book shop . If you are considering doing other Neurophysiology papers, it might be good to buy a copy.
Do I have to read the recommended text books and readings?
Advisable, more to expand and consolidate your knowledge.
How do I do well in this course?
Attend lectures and laboratories religiously and make sure you read Purves and other suggested readings given by the lecturers.
What help is available?
You can borrow books on short loan from The Mary Bullivant resource centre which has all the suggested Text Books required for Medsci 206 and other Physiology Courses.
What If I am sick for a lab, and miss it entirely but produce a medical cert. ? what happens then
Student does not submit a report for marking (but is encouraged to find out what went on from Group members & Tutors).
Lab marks for the semester are then taken from 3 reports. Weighting of coursework is changed so that the tests have an increased weighting (to 24%). This together with 3 reports (11%), add up to a total internal mark of 35% .
What If I am sick for lab (with med. cert.) ,but attend a lab at another time as a makeup. ?
Report is written up and submitted in the normal way.
What if a student is very sick and misses a substantial part of the course that they can not "make up" by attending labs at another time.
Our paper has a component of practical work attached to it (as do all science faculty papers). Should anyone only attend 2 or fewer labs, then they should have the weighting of Coursework to Final exam altered.
For example, if they were to miss the mid-semester test for medical reasons, then they can submit a compassionate consideration application and have a different weighting placed on the final exam (e.g. 80% exam 20% coursework is common). I suggest that it should not be any different for labs missed.
What if a student is sick after the lab & asks for an extension for writing & submitting their report.
This can be given, no problem, provided the Tutor is sure that the student had a genuine reason for submitting late.
I am not sure how to reference? Any help?

Could I record the lectures using a dictaphone?
The information presented in classes, laboratories and seminars is provided for your private study and research. Except in cases where that information is already publicly available (e.g. in a textbook or published article) information presented by staff should not be used for other purposes or made available to any other person. The unauthorised release of information to third parties could place staff, other students and/or research programmes at risk. There are also copyright issues, which may arise from the copying of the work of others. Thus, the use of recording devices (including recorders, dictaphones and mobile phones, cameras and the like) should always be cleared prior to a lecture or seminar with the staff concerned. Failure to do so could lead to allegations of breach of copyright which can result in costly litigation and financial penalties. The release of such recordings and/or copies to any other person could compromise the research programmes and the intellectual property which may arise from such research, or place the research, or staff or student safety at risk. Please ensure that you comply strictly with this requirement at all times.
