Practice task: Pre-Flight Briefing

You will hear part of a pre-flight briefing in which a flying instructor is talking about slow flight. For questions 1-17 complete the study notes below with UPTO TWO words from the briefing.

Before you listen, read the study notes and try to predict what information you might hear.

Each question is worth 1 mark. This section has 17 marks in total.

Slow Flight = s/f

First do CAS checks

C – clearing turns

A – altitude (must complete maneuver by 1,500 AGL)

S – safe area

Preparation:

  • Keep attention (1) outside but also monitor flight instruments
  • Flying at Vmc = minimum controllable airspeed

Steps to configure for s/f

  • (2) Carby heat on
  • (3) decrease throttle to about (4) 1500 (5) 1700 RPM
  •  Enrichen mixture (to cool engine if needed)

NB/ Once carb heat on and throttle out aircraft wants to yaw (6) right , so (7) left rudder needed to correct.

Maintaining altitude

1. As speed decreases down into (8) white arc, put all flaps on.

2. To maintain altitude (9) increase throttle.

  • Slow flying = full flaps, lots of power.
  • NB/ Hot days = air is (10) thin , so not possible to maintain altitude. Therefore, may need to push (11) carburetor in.

              (12) power maintains altitude

Airspeed controlled by (13) pitch attitude

Correcting actions

If airspeed too slow (14) reduce pitch attitude to speed up.

If airspeed too fast (15) pitch up to slow plane.

If we start to descend, (16) more power to climb.

If we start to climb, (17) too much power reduce power
