Read the text

You are now better prepared to read with more purpose and understanding. At this stage you are now reading for the main ideas and support arguments in the text. Here you are practising another vital reading skill - scanning.

When you scan, you are  looking for a fact or a detail or a particular vocabulary word. You are looking for answers to the questions you first raised before you began reading.

As you read,

  • practise fast reading techniques to improve reading efficiency. (View ELE Efficient Reading on ELE online).
  • ask questions to improve concentration and understanding. Practise using the four levels of questioning (see 'SQ4R: Question the text'.
  • remember the 'APE' strategy.

 BE AN APE reader!

  • Read actively.
  • Read purposefully.
  • Be engaged  and critical.
