Sentence types

Different sentence constructions can be created in these three ways:

Combine the following sets of sentences into one sentence, using the starter word(s) and suggested synonyms in brackets to replace the underlined words.

 

1  There have been many medical improvements in the last thirty years.  Yet, scientists have not been able to get rid of some infectious diseases.(considerable, advances in medicine, eradicate)

Break up each long sentence into two or more shorter sentences.

 

1  The children's failure to return before dark provoked great concern among the parents. (caused, very worried)

2  During the early 1990s immigration into New Zealand from Asia, especially from Hongkong, Taiwan, and the Republic of Korea, increased sharply following the introduction of a points-based selection in 1991, which assesses potential immigrants by a set of criteria including age, skills, and qualifications. (implemented, system, policy)

In 1991, New Zealand implemented.... The new policy...

3  The flow of immigrants to New Zealand from Asia declined significantly after 1997 as a result of an economic meltdown in the region which saw slumping currencies and devalued stock markets, causing a cash flow problem.

Use the logical marker suggested and the starter words to rephrase each sentence.

 

 

1  Pilot error was responsible for the crash according to the investigator's report. (Marker: cause)

2  If drug is taken, the flow of blood to the brain will be about 17% less than normal. This can make a person feel confused and tired. (Marker: lead to)

3 There is inequality in access to government services, with minority groups having far less than other citizens. (Marker: as..as)

4 Only those with official passes issued by the organising group were allowed into the grounds for the post-game celebrations. (Marker: If..)
