Amendments made to Statute for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy

Revisions to the PhD Statute and guidelines came into effect April 2014. You will find an updated online version of the PhD Statute here

Summary of changes:

  • Students will now submit one rather than three copies of their thesis in temporary binding and one electronic copy. Examiners will be sent an electronic copy but may request a hard copy (Clause 8(a) and guideline 33 ).
  • Where a student has already been suspended for two (rather than three) years, it is appropriate to      recommend termination rather than a further suspension. (clause 7(g) and guideline 31)
  • Suspensions will not normally be granted for periods of less than 2 (rather than 3) months. (clause 7(g)      and guideline 31)
  • Student views on recommended changes n supervision will be considered, but the Board of Graduate Studies reserves the right to appoint supervisors according to the availability of suitably qualified staff. (clause 7(d) and guideline 29)
  • One examiner must be able to attend the oral examination in person. The Board of Graduate Studies will determine whether the oral examiner attends in person or by video-conference. Candidates are expected to attend in person. (clause 9(m) and guideline 39)
  • The main supervisor or co-supervisor may attend the oral examination. (clause 9(m))
  • Normal full time and part time workload expectations and annual leave entitlements have been clarified      for candidates (guideline 1).
