Differences when teaching large classes

One of the differences when teaching a large class is that discipline can be more difficult. This can make the class harder to deal with when there is talking or inattention. One suggestion is to establish ground rules at the beginning of the semester. Discipline (usually talking) needs to be dealt with early on.

When video of a lecture is streamed to an overflow lecture theatre or another venue, some students feel 'detached' from the live lecture. Interaction is challenging and students may feel left out when the lecturer takes questions from the live audience. Activities where they work with their peers at the same venue (e.g. short discussions) can help.

Another posibility is to ask random or multi-choice questions at intervals, with answers given on the spot.
