Jadelle
There are two types of implant available worldwide- Implanon® and Jadelle®. Implanon® consists of a single subdermal rod and lasts for three years. Jadelle® consists of two subdermal rods and lasts for five years. Both implants have >99% contraceptive efficacy and they work by inhibiting ovulation and changing cervical mucus. Both release a dose of progesterone- Implanon® releases etonogestrel and Jadelle® releases levonorgestrel.
Contraindications are the same as that for the progesterone only pill. The most common side effect is irregular "nuisance" vaginal bleeding- and up to 1 in 7 women have the implant removed due to this bleeding. If this occurs, women should be encouraged to see their GP or family planning doctor as this can be treated with courses of a 30mcg COC.
The implant is inserted subdermally in the non-dominant arm. It is important to insert it on the inside of the arm and to avoid the neurovascular bundle and the sulcus between the biceps and triceps. There are many videos available on YouTube if you are interested in looking at the insertion technique.
