Module 6: Newborn history taking and examination

You will have learnt how to take an obstetric history from watching the video. As you will see from this section the mother's medical and obstetric history is also going to be an important indicator for the wellbeing of the baby.

Objectives. To be able to:

  1. Explain the importance of a detailed newborn examination
  2. List the areas that need to be examined with particular reference to any potential abnormalities
  3. Describe and recognize the more obvious fetal abnormalities .
  4. List specially the details from the mother's medical, obstetric and delivery history that may alert you to an at risk infant.
  5. Discuss with your local paediatricians the most appropriate ways to talk to the parents regarding the findings of your examination.
