Camera resolution is now often higher than the 72 ppi you need for the web.

This is great if you want to make a large print or cut out a small part of the image, but it can lead to enormous images being uploaded to the web.  This is not a good thing as it affects load time and server space.

Width is often the most important dimension when working on the web. 

Never use handles to resize a big image.  This may seem to work, but it doesn't necessarily make any difference to file size and can affect the quality badly.
