Summary

  • A literature review is a summary, analysis and synthesis of the scientific literature on a particular topic.
  • Start by working out the focus of your literature review and getting a broad idea about the topic.
  • Look for 'hot topics' in recent reviews and editorials of quality journals to help you come up with a research question.
  • Examine the topic from different points of view.
  • Identify the main keywords in your research topic and think of synonyms you can use.
  • Keep track of information as you go. Use a reference management tool such as RefWorks, Mendeley, Zotero, etc.
  • Remember to reference-  be accurate and consistent.
