3. Critical reading and note-taking

3.1 Reading strategy - finding what you need

Skim reading helps you get a quick overview of the article and helps you prioritise what you need to read in-depth.

1. Get a quick overview of article topic and structure by reading:

  • Title/abstract
  • End of the introduction/conclusion
  • Headings
  • Topic sentences
  • Diagrams and tables

2. Decide if the article is relevant and whether you need to read it:

  • What is the purpose of reading this article?
  • What information are you looking for?
  • Do you need to read the whole article? Or just one section?
