Problems

Prepare

  • Learn the facts, formulae, and methods that you will need to know.
  • Go through problems that have been done in lectures, tutorials, tests, assignments or study guides.  Make sure you understand how they were solved.
  • Practise as many problems as you can find. Ask your tutor/lecturer for more if you need to.
  • Learn the rules that govern the procedures you need to know. Make sure you pick up on, and understand, the reasons that certain problems follow certain procedures (and not others). Watch out for the key identifiers that tell you that tell you which procedures to use.

In the exam

  • Write down the relevant formulae, equations, rules, etc.
  • Clearly show the steps you have taken in working out the answer(s).
  • If necessary (and appropriate) write some notes to explain your answer(s).
  • For numerical problems involving computation, make sure you include the appropriate units (eg, ml, cm, N, m/sec, etc.) in your final answer(s).  Underline your final answer(s) if this is appropriate and will help clarify your answer.
  • Again, go through and solve the easier problems first – come back to the more difficult ones later.
