Paracetamol
Also known as acetaminophen overseas...
Regular paracetamol can reduce the requirement of opioids (up to 30%) so should be charted for all post operative patients who do not have contra-indications
Action: Change prostaglandin levels in the brain
Usual Dose
1gm QID PO/PR/IV
Advantages
- Cheap, safe
- Good for:
- Mild pain (by itself)
- Acute, chronic, cancer, non-cancer, nociceptive pain
- Mod-severe pain (with other drugs)
Disadvantages
- Liver damage in overdose
- Remember weight based dosing in some patients
- May be hard to swallow for some patients
