Indications for use of opioids
Acute Pain
- Post operative pain, trauma pain etc.
- Use in acute severe, nociceptive, non-cancer pain
- Short duration of pain - use a short acting drug
Cancer pain
- Acute/chronic/acute on chronic, nociceptive, cancer pain
- Long duration of pain - use a long acting drug
- Incident pain (e.g. on movement) - use a short acting drug
Chronic Non-cancer Pain
- There is no role for long term opioids in chronic non-cancer pain
Neuropathic Pain
- Role in acute, severe neuropathic pain - may be of some benefit??
- No role in chronic, non-cancer neuropathic pain
