Relate the text

Relate the text is done after you have finished reading and reciting to check that you understand the key ideas. When you relate the text, you make connections with what you already know about the topic and consider how you might use the new ideas and facts for an essay assignment or project.

You check if the text fulfills the purpose of reading it in the first place. You select what you need, check the references and make a note of the source details.

For example, the text “The War on Drugs” might be useful for your assignment on drug treatment and education that you have been exploring. You check any references at the end of the text for related publications that may be useful for further reading and note down their source information.
