Hopefully now you will feel that you have met some of the objectives set out at the beginning of this topic and feel you understand more about identifying and modifying common pregnancy risk factors. Here are a couple of MCQs to test your learning.  There is a stem and only 1 answer of the 5 is correct.

 Which of the following statements is NOT true for the effects of smoking in pregnancy?

  1. The effects of smoking are dose dependant

  2. The risks can be reversed by stopping smoking

  3. Smoking increases the risk of preterm labour

  4. Smoking can affect future fertility

  5. Nicotine replacement therapy should not be used in pregnancy

The correct answer is 5. Nicotine replacement doubles the cessation rate in non pregnant women and so is likely to help cessation in pregnancy. Also it delivers less plasma nicotine than smoking cigarettes and none of the other toxic components of cigarette smoke.

  1. The rate of gestational diabetes has been stable over the last 5 years

  2. Obese women are more likely to have a spontaneous vaginal birth than normal weight women
