Getting the Most out of Google Search

Tasha Bergson-Michelson of Google Search Education will provide an overview of how Google Search features and customization can be applied to academic search techniques. Content includes but is not restricted to: Google power searching, colour filtering, searching by image, and accessing non-English content.

Tasha will be conducting the session in Google Hangout, an online meeting space which allows real time communication and screen sharing.  You can find out more about Google Hangout here.

We need you to do a few things in preparation for the workshop. Instructions are provided in additional tabs on this page 

  • Please follow the Before the class  instructions to make sure you are prepared for the workshop. This will only take a few minutes.
  • We will be using the On the Day instructions at the actual workshop.
  • The Checklist can be used to make sure you have done everything you need to to prepare for the workshop.

 

 

Before Class

Tasha will be conducting the session in Google Hangout an online meeting space which allows real time communication and screen sharing.  

Instructions for setting up your Google+ account and registering for the hangout are included below.You can find out more about Google Hangout here.

Step 1: Create A Google Plus Account

1. Click here to go to the Google+ page

2.  Click on Create an account (top right hand corner)

3. Complete the registration form

4.  Send your new gmail address to t.bingham@auckland.ac.nz. Please free also to send through any questions you have about Searching Google to us. I will forward these to Tasha so that she can address these during the workshop.

Step 2: Add our Presenter to your Google Plus Circle

1.   Log into your Google Plus account: https://plus.google.com/

2.  Click on Continue to Google+ (if prompted)

3.  Click on this link: https://plus.google.com/113879286190138108366/about.

4.  Click on Add to Circles, and add to Acquaintances.

5.  Go back to your Google Plus account.https://plus.google.com/ Click on Acquaintances.

6.  Copy and paste the message below and click Share.

Hi +Tasha Bergson-Michelson, I am looking forward to seeing you in the Auckland Hangout.

Step 3: On the day

1. Please arrive 15 minutes early so that we can get you all logged into Google Hangout and can start promptly on the hour.

2.  Please also bring a set of headphones with microphone if you have them. We have a few sets but not  enough to go around.

During Class

1.   Log into your Google Plus account: https://plus.google.com/

2.  Click on Continue to Google+ (if prompted)

3.  Click on Home

4. Click on Hangouts

5.  Click on Start a hangout (this will install the Hangout plugin)

6. Click on Home and look for Tasha's invitation to join her hangout.  if you dont see it look here

Checklist

BEFORE THE WORKSHOP

  • Create a personal  Googe+ Acocunt and send your gmail email address to Tricia Bingham.
  • Email Tricia Bingham any questions you would like answered during the session.
  • Add Tasha (our presenter) to your  Circle of Acquantances on Google+.
  • Post a message to Tasha letting her know you will be attending.

 ON THE DAY

  • Bring a set of headphones with microphone.
  • Arrive fifteen minutes early so you can log in to the Google hangout and be ready to go.
