Improving your vocabulary

Want to vary the terminology in your essays, use academic phraseology?

  • Academic Phrasebank from the University of Manchester.
'The Academic Phrasebank is a general resource for academic writers. It aims to provide you with examples of some of the phraseological ‘nuts and bolts’ of writing organised according to the main sections of a research paper'. The resource is designed primarily for people for whom english is an other language.

  • The Business School's Learning Hub has some useful information on academic language.

Can someone proofread my assignment please?

Students often ask is there someone who can proofread their assignments before submitting.

The short answer is no there isn't.

The longer answer is the English Language Enrichment Centre can help.

They have:

  • drop in 15 minute sessions where they will look at one sample of your writing and advise what area of the writing you need to work on.
  • an online resource with a number of modules including a self-analysis section. Have a look at ELEonline.

An alternative resource you might like to try is Grammarly Premium.
