Preparing for successful academic writing
4.7 Establishing your position
With every assignment you write, you have the opportunity to develop your own academic voice. This requires knowing your readers and making decisions about the content and structure of your writing. You'll need to craft your ideas in a way that both conforms to the conventions of your writing context and opens up an effective communication channel with your audience.
As a successful writer you need to consider the following aspects:
Who to address What to write How to write it
Note that while you're likely to include descriptive writing in most assignments (e.g., to provide background information), you'll be expected to write in a critical and analytical style. Your writing needs to show your understanding and interpretation of course content.
