Link between pages

How do you create links to CourseBuilder pages from within the course itself?

Link to existing CourseBuilder page

Use the Richtext editor to link text (or an image) to an existing CourseBuilder page. Within the CourseBuilder editor, browse to the page that you want to link to. Copy the webpage address (URL) to your clipboard and return to the page where you want to link from.

Within the Richtext editor, select the text you wish to format then click the hyperlink tool . Note: you can also add hyperlinks to images. Single click an image to select it before clicking the hyperlink tool.

In the resulting popup window, paste the URL into the Link URL field.

Target - Choose whether the hyperlink should open in the same browser window, or open in a new window/tab.

Click Insert.

Note: When you publish your course, the link will be updated from the CourseBuilder editor URL to the Student view URL. See also: publishing.

Link to a new page (wiki page)

You can create a page that's not listed in the site navigation; this is called a wiki page and it requires special syntax. Use the Richtext editor to create a text link to a new page:

  1. Type the name you will give to the new page (should not already exist) and wrap it in double square brackets, e.g. [[forgot your password]]

  2. Click Save.

  3. Click forgot your password to create the new page.

Within the published course (Student view), wiki-style links open a popup window.

Note: if you change the page name later you will also need to update it within the double square brackets.

Tip: Wiki pages are not listed in the site navigation, access them via Show wiki pages in the page footer. Here you will be able to choose whether they open in the same browser window or a popup window, but this will only be evident in the Student view. More here.

If you are copying content from one page to another, and the content includes wiki-style links, you must copy the content from the Richtext editor, rather than the page itself. This will preserve the wiki-style syntax that creates the page link.

How do I add a wiki link to an image?

Within the Richtext editor, click the image to highlight it, then click Insert/Edit Link  to open the Link properties window.

Within the Link URL field, enclose the name of your wiki page in double square brackets. Add two underscore characters followed by 'url' to open the page in a new tab, or 'popup__url' to open the page in a popup window.

Examples:
[[Discussion forum__url]]
[[Discussion forum__popup__url]]

Link from site navigation

This method links one existing page (within the site navigation) to another. You might use this to create links from each topic/module to a page that's shared across all modules, e.g. a 'course resources' page.

Within the CourseBuilder editor, browse to the page that you want to link to. Copy the webpage address (URL) to your clipboard and return to the page where you want to link from.

Edit the properties of the page you want to link from

Paste the URL into the Website field.

Click Save.

Note: When you publish your course, the link will be updated from the CourseBuilder editor URL to the Student view URL. See also: publishing.
